This series examines the cowboy as both symbol and object of desire. I paint the boots instead of portraits: footwear standing in for the cowboy myth.

The cowboy carries rugged individualism, conquest, and a narrow idea of heroism. It has long propped up patriarchal norms. I’m drawn to that imagery and wary of it in equal measure. That’s the tension at the center of this work: an attraction that sits uneasily next to a refusal to keep feeding the symbolism the figure carries. Painting the boot instead of the body lets me hold both ideas at once.

I’m honored to exhibit this work at Fogtown Hoedown within a queer country western dance tradition that has always understood costume as a form of critique and reinvention.
